Apple has released the macOS 14.1 update. The latest version of the operating system fixes a couple of bugs, and introduces some new features to Apple Music and the Settings apps.
What’s new in macOS Sonoma 14.1
This is the first point update since macOS Sonoma 14 was launched on September 26th. Apple has updated the Music app’s favorites feature, it now supports songs, albums, and playlists. You can easily access your favorites from the library by filtering the view. These features are identical to those that were introduced in the iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 update, which was released yesterday.
As you may know, you can view your Mac’s warranty status from the Apple Menu by clicking on About This Mac > More Info > Show details page. The good news is that you can now use it to check the warranty status for your AirPods and Beats headphones and earbuds too. You will have to connect them to the Mac, after which it displays the info under the System Settings. To access it quickly, just type Coverage in the Search bar of the Settings app.
This is quite similar to what the coverage section that is available in iOS Settings can do. Interestingly, the page on macOS does not show the warranty status of iPhones that are tied to the same account. But, that is not a huge dealbreaker, as you can view the warranty information directly in the iPhone’s Settings app.
Ars Technica reports that the Tapback menu in the Messages app is now easier to access. All you need to do is right-click on the message that you want to react to, and then click on Tapback, after which you can select one of the options that pops-up (heart, thumbs up, etc.). It is a slight improvement, but one that would be appreciated by users who use the feature.
Bug fixes in macOS 14.1
Apple has patched an issue that was causing the System Services settings that are available within the Location Services (under the Settings > Privacy & Security section) to reset. Users had reported that they were unable to mount external drives if the devices were encrypted, this problem has been fixed with the macOS 14.1 update.
macOS Sonoma 14.1 ships with fixes for 33 security issues. Apple has also released macOS Ventura 13.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.7.1 for older Macs, these updates come with a number of security fixes too. On the bright side, none of the macOS versions had any actively exploited security issues. Safari 17.1 is now available for macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura, with patches for 4 security issues that were related to WebKit.
On a side note, the iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 updates are now available for users, you can read more about it in our previous coverage.
Apple has announced an event that it terms as “Scary Fast”, it has been scheduled for October 30. A teaser for the event has confirmed that the announcement will be related to Mac, and the rumor mill says that we can expect a new iMac refresh and some MacBook Pro models, all of which are said to be powered by the next-gen Apple Silicon, the M3 chip.
