Tesla’s auto-pilot setting must be pretty darned good because this story out of Canada is both a testament to the technology and, well, it’s downright scary, unbelievable and alarming.

According to a report on Yahoo.com, police in Alberta stopped a 20-year-old man for sleeping behind the wheel of his Tesla while it was on autopilot.

Don’t worry. He was only going 93 miles per hour in a 68 zone.

Oh, the man also had passenger in the car, who was also asleep, according to the report.

You have got to really believe in that autopilot to take a nap while cruising at nearly 90.

“Nobody was looking out the windshield to see where the car was going,” Sgt. Darrin Turnbull told CBC News. “I’ve been policing for over 23 years and the majority of that in traffic law enforcement, and I’m speechless. I’ve never, ever seen anything like this before, but of course, the technology wasn’t there.”

The report said the car was a 2019 Tesla Model S “which has an array of autopilot features from auto-steer to “traffic-aware” cruise control, both of which were engaged when the car was stopped.”

Despite the name — autopilot — however, the report notes that a driver is still needed to monitor and that this was incredibly dangerous. The report said the car was actually going 87 but when the police hit their lights it accelerated to 93.

Once the police caught up to the car, it said, the driver was issued a 24-hour suspension of his license and was eventually charged with dangerous driving.
